SENSIBLE COMMONS – LIVE WORKS
National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome – January 14-22, 2017

Sensible Commons—Live Works is an exhibition in the National Gallery of Art in Rome from January 14th to 22nd, 2017 in conjunction with C17, the Rome Conference on Communism (January 18-22, 2017). In this exhibition 20 works, selected from the museum’s permanent collection, will be on display, and 20 artists have been invited to respond to these works. These featured pieces include work by Piero Manzoni, Alberto Burri, Toti Scialoja, Giulio Paolini, Medardo Rosso, Marcel Duchamp, Filippo Palizzi, Pellizza da Volpedo, Giulio Turcato, Pino Pascali, Lucio Fontana… Among the artists invited to respond to these pieces are: Claire Fontaine, Gian Maria Tosatti, Davide D’Elia, Fiamma Montezemolo, Danilo Correale, Domenico Antonio Mancini, Giuliano Lombardo, Dora Garcia, Rene Gabri and Ayreen Anastas, Rossella Biscotti, Kinkaleri, Elisabetta Benassi, Cristina Kristal Rizzo.
In the galleries each day of the exhibition there will also be alternating performance (Cesare Pietroiusti, Andrea Lanini), film screenings (Guy Debord, Fabrizio Ferraro), discussion (Giacomo Marramao, Christian Marazzi, Paolo Virno), poetry readings (Vincenzo Ostuni, Lidia Riviello) and a sleep concert (Matteo Nasini). To further structure the event, there will be – in addition to the conference of C17 on “Communism of the Sensible” (with Jacques Rancière, Michael Hardt, Alexei Penzin, Manule Borja-Villel, Claire Fontaine) – two roundtables: one dedicated to the archive (with Mario Tronti, Manuel Borja-Villel, Marco Scotini) and another to curation (with Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, Marco Baravalle, Annarosa Buttarelli, Tarek Elhaik, and the restorers of the Gallery). The exhibition features 6 sections: exponential works and incurable works (in conjunction with the works of the National Gallery), works in struggle (a paper archive and an digital archive based on an open source software) works in flight (projections), works under construction (works constructed during the days of the exhibit, including a musical improvisation with Michele Rabbia, Ludovico Takeshi Minasi, Daniele di Buenaventura) and contemplative works (sensory dissonances from natural wine, the celestial sphere, and the garden)
In addition there will be two evenings – January 19th and 20th from 18.00 to 24.00 – dedicated to Common Words between artistic and narrative practices, sponsored by the Institut Français in Italy, the Fondazione Nuovi Mecenati and the French Academy in Rome, under the international project La Nuit des Idées. A dance and theater piece (Alexandre Roccoli, Muta Imago, Nhandan Chirco and Branko Popovic) and film screenings (Kader Attia, Adrian Paci, Jean-Marie Straub, Malastrada) will alternate with words by Jacques Rancière, Etienne Balibar, Pierre Dardot, Christian Laval, Franco Berardi Bifo, Morgane Merteuil, Andrea Carlino, Giorgio Passerone and performances by Alex Cecchetti and Claire Fontaine.
The exhibition emerges from the work of OperaViva Magazine and from a seminar organized by the Fondazione Lac o Le Mon.

THE ROME CONFERENCE ON COMMUNISM C17
In conjunction with the show Common Sensibility—Live Works, an international conference will be held, C17 – The Rome Conference on Communism, from January 18th to the 22nd held at Esc – Atelier Autogestito and the gallery spaces of the National Gallery. The conference will be organized into 5 conferences and 4 workshops, including the participation of speakers such as: Étienne Balibar, Bruno Bosteels, Luciana Castellina, Pierre Dardot, Claire Fontaine, Michael Hardt, Augusto Illuminati, Christian Laval, Christian Marazzi, Giacomo Marramao, Morgane Merteuil, Sandro Mezzadra, Antonio Negri, Alexei Penzin, Jacques Rancière, Trebor Scholz, Enzo Traverso, Mario Tronti, Paolo Virno, Saskia Sassen… For C17 – The Rome Conference on Communism, the spaces in the National Gallery will host the 4 workshops (on January 19th and 20th in the Sala delle Colonne and the Sala ex Sala Pascali, from 9:30-13:00) and the panel “Communism of the Sensible” (January 21st in the Sala delle Colonne, from 11:00 – 15:00).
